It was originally equipped with a Celeron CPU at 1. This ga ve my R50e so much life that I can still use it for everyday tasks, including web browsing, office work, and network administration tasks.

While it doesn't stream video very well, it is perfect for everything else. While not the same as a Cure 2 Duo, this 2. There is another that runs at 2. This item will be further appreciated by those running lesser powered CPU's than I was, some are in the 1. Once installed, make sure that the computer is running good, then download the latest version of Prime95, let it run for no less than 12 hours the Arctic Silver 5 needs this to cureand preferably 24 if possible, make sure the main battery is removed to prevent overcharging constant topoff charging that'll eat away at lifespan.

This will provide a good curing of the paste, although it takes a total of hours to finally cure, the rest can be performed by normal usage of the computer.

Quality paste will prevent this.

This was purchased to give my Thinkpad a bit of a speed up from its Celeron based processor. Whilst the computer got generally quicker, It still didn't allow me to watch Youtube videos smoothly. So whilst I have no complaints about the product. I have just come to terms that what we do online now is so much different than 10 years ago.

Overall, this was not a huge step up from the Pentium M processor but would be great for those with any CPUs in particular, Celerons or Pentium Ms slower than 1. For those who always pine for the ultimate in performance, I'll say that going from a 1. Generally, laptops are most practically affected by changes in their storage subsystem hard drives to SSDs, or slower-HD to faster-HD would be better choices, though the cost of such changes tend to be more than CPU swaps.

The Intel Pentium M processor is the next step towards achieving high mobile performance at very low power. This exciting new processor supports Enhanced Intel SpeedStep technology at multiple operating points instead of two points support on existing processors.

Real-time dynamic switching of the voltage and frequency between multiple performance modes is based on CPU demand. This occurs by switching the bus ratios, core operating voltage, and core processor speeds without resetting the system. Multiple Enhanced Intel SpeedStep technology operating points enable optimal performance at the lowest power. Additional Product Features Product Type. Great upgrade for legacy ThinkPads, such as the R50e! An OK upgrade for those cursed with sub Intel Core iK - 3.

Intel Core iK 3.Sixteen months ago, Intel released a confusing little thing called Centrino; it wasn't a new processor or chipset, but rather a "technology".

Intel pumped billions into the marketing of this technology and even to this day, we still see the same "What is Centrino? But unlike most multi-billion dollar marketing campaigns, Centrino wasn't a hip name masking uninteresting technology; instead, Centrino encompassed one of the most impressive microprocessor architectures to ever come out of Intel: Banias.

We had all heard about Banias, which was officially named the Pentium M, for almost two years, but most shrugged it off as a rebranded Pentium III. With the Pentium 4's power requirements climbing, it was all too easy to believe that Intel would just go back to a much cooler running architecture for the future of their mobile processors.

But as we just finished mentioning, this processor was far from rehashed technology. Last year, we took an in-depth look at the Pentium M and came away from the experience extremely pleased.

Our sentiments were echoed by manufacturers and end users alike, with the Pentium M and Centrino notebooks that use the processor selling extremely well and truly enabling high performance, long battery life, thin and light notebooks.

What Pentium M brought Intel was the portability and form factor advantages of Transmeta, with the performance that Intel customers were used to. To put it bluntly, Intel's Pentium M was an instant success and well deserving of the success at that. But in our long running history at AnandTech, we've never been quite satisfied with one successful product - we want to see improvements, perfection of the perfect, if you will.

And thus, it was no surprise that we were quite eager to take a look at the follow-up to Intel's 0. We first heard about Dothan before Banias ever hit the streets as Pentium M. If you'll remember from our original article on the Pentium M, Banias only missed its target completion date by a matter of days.

One by-product of on-time execution was that a number of architectural tweaks that the design team wanted to get into Banias had to be left out, a sacrifice made to preserve on-time execution. As soon as the Banias design was complete, those final architectural tweaks and enhancements that didn't make it into the first Pentium M incarnation were at the top of the list for its successor.

As a result, Dothan is best viewed as a more polished evolution of Banias, with higher clocks and more cache made possible by Intel's 90nm process.

But unlike Banias, Dothan wasn't the perfect student on time to its launch; instead, Dothan was released after months of delays. Intel has already publicly released the reason for Dothan's delay. There was apparently an analog design issue with Dothan; more specifically, a PLL was too jittery.

The solution to the problem required another spin of the silicon, which takes a long time even longer at 90nm and resulted in Dothan's lengthy delay. Being an evolutionary, rather than revolutionary part, Dothan isn't nearly as exciting to talk about as Banias was, but as you'll soon see, that doesn't take away from its worthiness of carrying the Pentium M name. But you will have to dismantle it piece by piece until you get to the heatsink that covers the processor. Once you remove the heatsink, turn the screw to unlock the CPU from the socket. Double check the wire is in the right place and then seat the Mhz Dothan in the socket, and secure it in place using the Zif-lock. Carefully clean the core surface of any old thermal paste residue and fingerprints using pure isopropyl alcohol, even the thinnest oil layer will reduce the effectiveness of heat transfer from the core to the heat sink resulting in overheating of the CPU.

While possible to achieve, the added voltage will raise the already high temperature making an overclocked 2. Keep a poker face as you trade your fast 1. Intel Pentium M 1.The Pentium M is a family of mobile bit single-core x86 microprocessors with the modified Intel P6 microarchitecture introduced in March and forming a part of the Intel Carmel notebook platform under the then new Centrino brand.

The Pentium M represented a new and radical departure for Intel, as it was not a low-power version of the desktop-oriented Pentium 4but instead a heavily modified version of the Pentium III Tualatin design itself based on the Pentium II core design, which in turn had been a heavily improved evolution of the Pentium Pro. It is optimized for power efficiency, a vital characteristic for extending notebook computer battery life. Running with very low average power consumption and much lower heat output than desktop processors, the Pentium M runs at a lower clock speed than the laptop version of the Pentium 4 The Pentium 4-Mobileor P4-Mbut with similar performance - a 1.

The usually power-hungry secondary cache uses an access method which only switches on the portion being accessed. The main intention behind the large cache was to keep a decent-sized portion of it still available to the processor even when most of the L2 cache was switched off, but its size led to a welcome improvement in performance. Other power saving methods include dynamically variable clock frequency and core voltage, allowing the Pentium M to throttle clock speed when the system is idle in order to conserve energy, using the SpeedStep 3 technology which has more sleep stages than previous versions of SpeedStep.

With this technology, a 1. This is useful to notebook manufacturers as it allows them to include the Pentium M into smaller notebooks. Shuttle Inc. Pentium M processors are also of interest to embedded systems ' manufacturers because the low power consumption of the Pentium M allows the design of fanless and miniaturized embedded PCs. As the M line was originally designed in Israelthe first Pentium M was identified by the codename Baniasnamed after an ancient site in the Golan Heights.

The Intel Haifa team had previously been working on the memory controller for Timnawhich was based on earlier P6 memory controller designs giving them detailed knowledge of P6 architecture which they used when Intel gave them a crash project to create a backup mobile CPU. On September 17,Intel unveiled plans for releasing its then next-generation of Pentium M processors, codenamed "Dothan" by them.

It was named after another ancient town in Israel, and it launched formally on May 10, However, tests conducted by third party hardware review sites show that Banias and Dothan equipped notebooks have roughly equivalent battery life. These revised Dothan processors include the 1. The processor line had models running at clock speeds from 1. The models with lower frequencies were either low voltage or ultra-low voltage CPUs designed for improved battery life and reduced heat output.
